Is decision fatigue real? What survived replication, at home

The explanation usually attached to decision fatigue is ego depletion, which two large preregistered replications failed to find, and the field evidence most often quoted for it is an Israeli parole-board study whose headline reading has been disputed in print since the year it appeared. What survives is narrower and more useful at home: choice overload under specific conditions, and the cost of taking the same household decision again every week.


The short answer, and what it rests on

Decision fatigue names something real: being tired at the end of a day full of choices. Nothing below disputes it. What has not held up is the explanation usually attached to it: that choosing draws on a single reserve of willpower, that the reserve runs down with each decision like a battery, and that later decisions are worse for it. That explanation is ego depletion. The step from resisting a temptation to making a choice is the one the popular account needs, and the 2011 parole study below makes it: "Prior research suggests that making repeated judgments or decisions depletes individuals' executive function and mental resources." Everything here is about that claim.

Two preregistered multi-laboratory replications have tested that effect. The first, in 2016, estimated it at d = 0.04 with a confidence interval that included zero. The second, in 2021, found d = 0.06 and concluded that the effect "is likely small (including zero)". That parole study has two published critiques that explain much of its result by the order in which cases were heard.

What survives is narrower. Choice overload, where more options produce a worse outcome, appears under specific conditions and not otherwise. For a household there is also an argument, labelled as one below: the strain comes less from how many decisions a day contains than from taking the same one again.

The household version of the claim, and the part of it that holds up

The household version: by six in the evening you have decided so many small things, what to cook, whose turn it is, whether the washing goes on, that nothing is left and the choice of dinner defeats you.

The work behind that feeling can be sized. The Office for National Statistics, in its Time use in the UK bulletin covering 23 September to 1 October 2023, found that adults in the UK spent an average of 46 minutes a day making food and drinks. These are experimental statistics from 3,659 completed diaries, counting main activities only. How the same bulletin's unpaid-work totals divide between women and men is set out in this site's piece "How to split chores with your partner"; the figure that matters here is the daily one.

That measures time, not decisions: no source used here counted the decisions in anyone's day, and nor does this piece. What the diaries show is that the work is daily — a meal made today has to be made again tomorrow, and whatever was left undecided about it is undecided again.

So the experience holds up. The mechanism does not, and it sets the remedy: if choosing does not drain a battery, cutting trivial choices changes little, and the effort belongs elsewhere.

The story as it is usually told, and where it came from

The theory underneath is the strength or resource model of self-control, which Roy Baumeister and colleagues proposed in 1998. The 2016 replication report sets it out: "According to their model, performance on tasks requiring self-control is governed by a generalized, unitary, and finite 'internal' resource." In the standard experiment participants complete one self-control task, then a second, and do worse on the second: "The state of reduced self-control capacity was termed 'ego depletion'."

A 2010 meta-analysis of 198 published tests put the effect at d = 0.62, read at the time as robust and medium in size. Extended to choosing, the idea predicts that if a choice draws on the same reserve, a long run of decisions should leave the later ones worse, or push them towards whatever takes least effort.

In 2011 a study of Israeli parole hearings appeared to show exactly that in experienced judges, with a recovery after each meal break — the version most people have met.

What happened when laboratories tried to replicate it

The first doubt was statistical. In 2014 Evan Carter and Michael McCullough, in Frontiers in Psychology, returned to the dataset behind the d = 0.62 estimate with three methods for detecting and correcting publication bias, among them trim and fill and the regression-based correction PET-PEESE. They reported "very strong signals of publication bias, along with an indication that the depletion effect is actually no different from zero". A statistical correction is an estimate, not an experiment, so the next step mattered.

That step was a Registered Replication Report by Martin Hagger and colleagues in Perspectives on Psychological Science in 2016: twenty-three laboratories ran one standardised protocol on 2,141 participants. The pooled effect, in the authors' words, "was small with 95% confidence intervals that encompassed zero": on the primary measure, d = 0.04, with an interval from -0.07 to 0.15.

A single protocol might have been the wrong one, so a second project used two: published in Psychological Science in 2021 with Kathleen Vohs as first author, it had 36 laboratories and 3,531 participants. The confirmatory test "found a nonsignificant result (d = 0.06)", and a Bayesian analysis found the data four times more likely under no effect than under the effect specified in advance. The abstract says: "Hence, preregistered analyses did not find evidence for a depletion effect." An exploratory analysis ignoring the exclusion rules found a significant d = 0.08, on data about equally likely under either hypothesis.

The paper's own summary is that "depletion is not as reliable or robust as previously assumed". "Debunked" slightly overstates that. "Failed to replicate at anything like its published size" is exact: 0.06 is a tenth of 0.62, and an effect that small cannot carry the story of an evening ruined by a morning of choices.

The parole study, and the people who reread the data

Shai Danziger, Jonathan Levav and Liora Avnaim-Pesso published "Extraneous factors in judicial decisions" in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2011. Their data were 1,112 rulings by eight Israeli judges, collected over 50 days in a ten-month period, with two daily food breaks dividing each day into three sessions; parole requests make up 78.2% of them, the rest being requests by parolees to change the terms of their parole or by parole candidates to change the terms of their incarceration. They reported that "the percentage of favorable rulings drops gradually from ≈65% to nearly zero within each decision session and returns abruptly to ≈65% after a break". Their own caution is rarely quoted: "we cannot unequivocally determine whether simply resting or eating restores the judges' mental resources".

The first critique came in the same journal that year. Keren Weinshall-Margel and John Shapard pointed out that the conclusion "depends on the order of cases being random or at least exogenous to the timing of meal breaks", and that it was not: "unrepresented prisoners usually go last and are less likely to be granted parole than prisoners with attorneys". In their data unrepresented prisoners were about one-third of cases and succeeded 15% of the time, against 35% for prisoners with counsel. They concluded that the pattern "is likely an artifact of the order of case presentation".

The original authors replied in the same issue, with legal representation added as a control: "The original results replicate in every analysis; case order and the meal break remain robust predictors of the parole decision."

A second critique, by Andreas Glöckner in Judgment and Decision Making in 2016, needs no assumption about who is heard last. Favourable rulings take longer than unfavourable ones, and his simulation showed the alternative: "An effect of similar magnitude would be produced by a (hypothetical) rational judge who plans ahead minimally and ends a session instead of starting cases that he or she assumes will take longer directly before the break." The cases heard just before a break are then disproportionately the quick ones, which are refusals; his title gives the verdict: the effect's magnitude is overestimated.

The parole result, then, is an observational pattern, not a clean demonstration: its authors, in Glöckner's words, only "cautiously speculate" that depletion drove it.

What survives: choice overload, under specific conditions

The other half of the popular account is that more options are themselves the burden. Its traceable origin is Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper's 2000 paper, in which shoppers offered 6 jams were more likely to buy than shoppers offered 24, and its replication status is contested rather than settled either way. The two meta-analyses that fought over it, Scheibehenne, Greifeneder and Todd in 2010 and Chernev, Böckenholt and Goodman in 2015, are set against each other in this site's piece "Why a household to-do list stops being a list", and are not re-argued here.

What this piece needs from them is the four factors Chernev and colleagues identify, which decide whether a larger set of options hurts. Decision task difficulty covers time constraints, accountability for the decision and the number of attributes per option. Choice set complexity covers whether one option is clearly best, how attractive the options are overall, and how they relate to one another. Preference uncertainty is how far the chooser already knows what they want. The decision goal is how far they are trying to keep effort down. When the task is hard, the set is complex, preferences are vague and the aim is to minimise effort, more options produce less satisfaction, more regret, more putting-off and more switching.

What survives is conditional: a long list of options is no burden in itself, and becomes one under pressure, when nothing stands out and you do not know what you want.

Repetition, not depletion: why the same decision taken weekly costs more than a new one

This section is an argument, not a finding: the choice overload studies are of people choosing among products, and nothing cited here measured a household.

Apply the four conditions to what to cook at six o'clock. There is a time constraint: people are hungry now. No option is clearly best. The preference has not been worked out in advance. And the aim is to get it over with. Whose turn it is to clean the bathroom adds the accountability that Chernev and colleagues list under task difficulty, because the answer must be justified to someone else with a stake in it.

None of those conditions depends on how many decisions came earlier in the day. They are properties of the circumstances, which for a household's recurring decisions are the same every time. A new decision, such as which sofa to buy, is taken once and usually at leisure. The weekly one is never closed: nothing records the answer, so it is taken again next week under the same pressure, with the same unformed preference, in front of the same person.

On that account the cost is the number of repeats multiplied by the conditions of each, which is why a standing rota removes more strain than a simplified wardrobe. What to wear is decided alone, with a known preference. Who does the bins is decided between people, and settling it once removes a weekly negotiation.

Decisions worth making once, and how to make them stick

The candidates are decisions that recur on a schedule, involve more than one person and gain no new information from week to week: which dinners fall on which weekdays; which day the shopping is done and by whom; who does each recurring job and when; the date the bills are checked each month; and the fallback meal for the evening the plan fails.

Making them stick follows from the conditions above. Decide at a quiet time, which removes the time constraint, and work out the preference then, so nothing is left to choose on the night. Write the result where everyone in the household can see it: a rule only one person remembers is reopened each time someone else asks.

Where a job is shared, let a rule produce the answer instead of a person: the turn passes in a fixed order, so nobody has to decide whose turn it is or remember whose it was. That answers the negotiation rather than the job, and it does not suit every job: which ones should not rotate, and what the handover costs, is worked through in "Rotating chore schedules, and the jobs that should not rotate". In Barriers, a repeating task can be set to rotate between the members of a household on a fixed rule, which is the specific thing that stops the same allocation being renegotiated every week. A paper rota on the fridge does the same work, provided the order is written down.

Give every standing decision a review date: the alternative to deciding weekly is deciding once a quarter, on purpose, with everyone present. And keep defaults overridable: a fixed Tuesday dinner that cannot be swapped is a new source of argument.

What not to turn into a rule

Do not cut choices for the sake of it. The 2010 meta-analysis notes that in some studies more choices "may instead facilitate choice and increase satisfaction", and nothing in the replication record supports the idea that a trivial choice spends something you will need later.

Do not mistake a rule one person wrote for a decision made once. If only one of you chose it, the argument it was meant to end returns as an argument about the rule. The Journal's piece "The mental load: the work of remembering a household" deals with who carries the noticing.

Do not expect rules to cure tiredness. In the 2021 replication an exploratory analysis reported: "The more that participants in the depletion condition felt fatigued, the worse their subsequent self-control." That was not a preregistered test, but it fits ordinary experience: fatigue is real even though the battery account of it is not, and what answers it is rest.
